Water Rate Increase Information

The last water rate increase was seven years ago (2018).  The water rates are increasing to ensure we can continue providing safe, reliable water service.

Several factors contribute to the rate increase:

• Infrastructure Improvements: Aging pipes, filtration plants, and other water system repairs, replacements, and upgrades to keep them functioning properly.
• Rising Operational Costs: The cost of energy, chemicals, and labor needed to treat and deliver clean water is increasing.
• Environmental and Regulatory Requirements: Regulations and environmental standards require investments in water treatment and conservation programs to ensure clean, safe water.

Each customer bill will vary depending on consumption.  Consumption includes watering the garden, filling a pool, washing your car, doing numerous loads of laundry, duration of showers and baths, etc.  Consumption varies from customer to customer. 

A customer with an average consumption of 4,000 gallons/month of water usage may see an estimated $16-20/month increase.

Yes! 

All water customers will see a Public Fire Protection charge on their utility bill.  This charge is to maintain and support fire hydrants, upsizing water mains and pumps to support fire suppression throughout the city.  This charge does NOT support the fire department, staff or equipment. 

NOTE:  This charge is currently on the general property tax levy and is paid for through property taxes.  It is being removed from the property taxes and placed on the utility bills. 

The new Public Fire Protection charge will be approximately $10/month for typical residential properties. 

Based on an average consumption of 4,000 gallons/month and with the addition of the Public Fire Protection charge, the estimated increase will be $25-30/month.  Again, this will vary based on water usage. 

Yes, there are several ways you can reduce your water usage and lower your bill:

• Fix any leaks in your plumbing.
• Use water-efficient appliances and fixtures.
• Limit seasonal outdoor watering and adopt water-saving landscaping practices.

Annual minor rate adjustments may be necessary to continue maintaining and improving the water system as costs evolve.

If you have concerns about the rate increase, you can contact the WI Public Service Commission. Before implementation of the proposed water rate increase, a public hearing will be held to give customers an opportunity to voice their opinions.
